DR SURE'S UNUSUAL PRACTICE 'No Pigs / Desksitter' 7"
$18.00
Recorded live at Secret Location Studios — a 1950's Fairfield warehouse with a band room the size of an airplane hangar — No Pigs/ Desksitter marks DSUP's first full-scale studio production. With Dan Luscombe (The Drones) producing and ARIA-winner Michael Badger (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard) mixing, the brief was simple: capture the band as they are. No click, no tricks, just a band playing like the room is already full.
7 years, 3 European tours, 3 LP's and a hoard of EP's and mixtapes into the project, Dr Sure's Unusual Practice doggedly distill the ills of the age into ambitious, thought-provoking art. Driven by Dougal Shaw's DIY approach, often the message has preceded the method- like "Scomo Goes To Hawaii" written, recorded and released in 3 days as a firefighter fundraiser - but here, with the band at the centre, the production stands up to the song's clarion call.
"It's about a farm with a pig problem," quips Shaw, describing the song's Orwellian portrayal of a coercive ruling class, "Animal Farm style, but the other animals are clued on to it, they're getting fired up."
The song found its final spark during a July performance at Binic Festival in Bretagne. As the final note rang out the 10,000-strong crowd, erupted into "Siamo Tutti Antifascisti" — we are all anti-fascist — matching the cadence of the song's outro. After the moment spread online the chant followed the band through Europe.
Pulling up for 3 days of recording mid-tour, in the attic of a 14th century homestead in Normandy, drummer Miranda Holt suggested they add it to the song permanently. It stuck.
In the garden of the same homestead, armed with a handycam, DSUP discover the ruins of a 13th century Abbey fortified by a moat. A fortnight on, after the final show of the tour, they wake up in a chateau-come-artist-residence outside Montesquiou, beside a crumbling shed softened by centuries. After recruiting homeowner Pierre to wield the handycam, Shaw convinces the band to unload the tour van one final time.
No Pigs and accompanying music video are out November 28. It is the first of 2 singles to be released December 10 on an exclusive recycled vinyl 7", via Marthouse Records, to celebrate their performance at Meredith Music Festival next weekend. The band are donating all proceeds to Palestinian Mutual Aid & Black People's Union. 7
